SANDOWN HILLSIDE & LAKESIDE

Administration: Melbourne Racing Club. From 15th Nov. 2008 , Sandown Racecourse became known as Betfair Park.

History: As well as being Melbourne's fourth Melbourne Metropolitan racing track, Sandown is also one of the few permanent motor racing circuits left in the world. Built in the 1960's, names such as Fangio, Moss, Brabham, Brock, Skaife and Richards have competed there. Sandown is the first Victorian racecourse to carry a sponsors name. With naming rights to Sandown and race sponsorship, off-course bettting exchange Betfair is able to promote it's services on course, although the only way to place a bet with them is via the internet or by phone.

Minor renovations to the horse racecourse in 2003 resulted in the introduction of two separate tracks at this course – Hillside and Lakeside. Their feature race is the Sandown Classic (formally the Sandown Cup) and takes place the week after Emirates Stakes Day at Flemington.

About the tracks: Circumference of Lakeside is 1857 metres, length of the home straight is 407 metres. Circumference of Hillside is 2087 metres, home straight is also 407 metres.

Characteristics: Generally quite fair, there is a rise steep in the home straight to the winning post which usually makes it difficult to lead all the way. The Lakeside track is positioned on the inside of the course and can be quite susceptible to wet weather. Being drawn in and trying to lead on the rail under these conditions will present problems, winners will be the ones finishing on late. However, unlike the other Melbourne courses, when the rail is in the True position and the track is Good it is possible to lead all the way. The Hillside track generally exhibits little bias, although we often see horses swooping from behind on days when the rail is out 5 metres or more.
How to get to Sandown Betfair Park:

By Car: Located about 25kms from the Melbourne CBD or 8 kms from Dandenong via Princes Highway, parking is available on course. Melways reference 80 D7.

By Train: Sandown Park Railway station via the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines.
